Surat al-Munafiqun, 4-5 (The anger and arrogance of the hypocrites)

When you see them, their outward form appeals to you, and if they speak you listen to what they say. But they are like propped-up planks of wood. They imagine every cry to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them.  Allah assail them! How they are perverted! (Surat al-Munafiqun, 4)

Allah says they are empty, like propped-up planks of wood. They have to lean against something, and they lean against unbelievers. Allah says they are like propped-up planks. Planks lean against walls, while hypocrites lean against unbelievers. The hypocrite is a dead, soulless entity. Satan has taken over their souls, they have become satans. Imagine that satan has possessed a log, so it is cunning but foolish and unintelligent. It also has a lifeless quality to it. But when it speaks, people imagine it is something worth listening to. But this is something that comes from satan inhabiting that log. The hypocrite is as cunning but also as stupid as satan. Like satan, they bring troubles on themselves. Satan spends all his life suffering and hypocrites spend their whole lives in pain.
The hypocrite is a very different entity. He regards everything as working against him. Newspaper reports are against him and reports of any offensive by Muslims also work against him. For example, a rash develops on his skin and he thinks it will kill him. He cannot escape that idea even if you try to disabuse him of it. He has an insane thirst for life. He uses religion so expertly that people listen when he talks, but the hypocrite is in fact irreligious, and that becomes clear in the Hereafter. Muslims must not drop their guard and imagine that the hypocrites can do no harm. Hypocrites are their enemies, in the same way that satan is. That characteristic of enmity never disappears. That is why you are making a rod for your own back if you say that these people are harmless or that no harm can come from satan. Satan permits the Muslim to remain sound and healthy. The same with the hypocrites. Sloth arises where there are no hypocrites. It is the hypocrites that brought [former Prime Minister] Erbakan back to life. I consider the people mentioned, and Numan Kurtulmus apart. The hypocrites also made the Companions hugely enthusiastic in the time of our Prophet (saas). Hypocrites hurt themselves by the day. They always grieve over things. They complain about all the efforts they have made, their impaired health and their sufferings. These pains start to suffocate them.

So beware of them:  Allah says, therefore, be on your guard, be strong. And be allies. Muslims must protect and support and watch over one another. Hypocrites enable believers to be like buildings welded together with lead.
 
Allah assail them!: That means that Allah will assail and destroy them. They are destroyed psychologically in this world and suffer the pangs of Hell in the Hereafter. These can be no ease in their hearts. Allah will inflict suffering on them.
 
How they are perverted: They go alongside Shaykh Nazim [al-Haqqani al-Qibrisi] and pretend to be with him, then they join the communists and resemble them, when they join the satanists they resemble them. The hypocrite is always flexible.
 
Hypocrites think they supposedly deceive Allah, but in fact Allah deceives them. Allah locks them into very painful lives. Religion is what angers them the most, and Allah locks them inside religion. They are forced to talk in terms of religion.
 
Allah says in the verse that if they pray, they do so reluctantly. If there is someone with them, then they are prepared to pray, but unwillingly. Prayer hurts them. They do not like prayer at all.
 
They remember Allah very little. Hypocrites talk a lot about religion when there are Muslims with them. But very little among themselves. They hardly ever say “insha’Allah.” The others are then astounded and ask if they said that because they really believe it.
 
When they are told, “Come, and the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you,” they turn their heads and you see them turn away in haughty arrogance. (Surat al-Munafiqun, 5)

Hypocrites accept no leader. They want nobody at their head. They set up a separate mosque in the time of the Prophet (saas). Hypocrites are amazingly proud and arrogant. They try to keep away from and not speak to Muslims, and at the end of the day they sever all links with them entirely. All hypocrites also greatly admire themselves. But they never like one another. This is one of their most blatant characteristics, but they try to keep it hidden by using very humble language. They try to conceal themselves because they are cunning. But disbelief from time to time escapes their lips, and that is what one must notice, as that is when their disbelief becomes apparent.
