Eid al-Fitr was marked with great celebration in Russia. The Eid prayer was performed in six mosques in Moscow and another 14 in the surrounding region. Some 100,000 Muslims who were unable to find room in the mosques prayed in the streets around Moscow’s central mosque that had been allocated for them. Moscow Municipality helped those coming to attend the prayer by setting up a sound system. Russian state television Channel One Russia also broadcast the prayer live.
Chairman of the Russian Muftis Council Ravil Gainutdinov read out Eid messages from Russian head of state Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev and other officials.
