The example of rocks which crash down

2399

In the Qur’an, Almighty Allah revealed His infinite might, the mightiness and superiority of His rank, the severity and the vastness of the torment He has laid out for those who are against Him in great detail. A person must think about the greatness, size and infinity  of the torment with which our Lord threatens us –the torment of Hell. As a result of this, fear of Allah would be formed in his heart naturally. This fear ensures that believers abide by the commands and prohibitions of Almighty Allah. In the Qur’an, fear of Allah manifested in believers is explained with an erudite example in order to define how strong this fear is. It is revealed in the verse as such:

Then your hearts became hardened after that, so they were like rocks or even harder still. There are some rocks from which rivers gush out, and others which split open and water pours out, and others which crash down from fear of Allah. Allah is not unaware of what you do. (Surat al-Baqara, 74)

In the Qur’an, Almighty Allah emphasizes the feelings, moods and severity of the fear of believers who fear Him with the words “rocks which crash down”, in order to distinguish the fear of Allah explained in the verse from other worldly fears. Truly, a believer’s fear of Allah is a aform of fear that is full of awe that resembles no other. This fear is not a type of fear that gives trouble and torment to people like other fears do. On the contrary, it is a fear that reminds the person of his servitude and weakness; that opens up his mind and broadens his consciousness and that in turn leads  him to a very superior state of morality. This fear is a fear that increases a believer’s aspiration for the Hereafter and awakens his feelings of hope and enthusiasm. Fear of Allah is a truly noble feeling that increases a believer’s closeness to and love of Allah and that gives great moral pleasure to him.
