The example of the rock left stripped bare in heavy rain

2276

Spending means a person using his means and possessions in the way of Almighty Allah. Therefore, as in all worship, it is important to keep the wisdom of this worship in mind when spending because spending one's livelihood is a means of moral cleansing and purification for believers.

Almighty Allah explains that there will be no decrease in the possessions of those who spend their livelihood in the way of Allah in order to earn His good pleasure and that their earnings will always be abundant; on the other hand the deeds of those who reluctantly spend, or spend only to show off, will bring no benefit in the Hereafter, as is illustrated in the example of the stripped rock in the Qur’an. Our Lord reveals in Surat al-Baqara that these people spend in an insincere way and that the things they earn will not afford them anything as follows:

You who have faith! Do not nullify your charity by demands for gratitude or insulting words, like him who spends his wealth, showing off to people and not having faith in Allah and the Last Day. His likeness is that of a smooth rock coated with soil, which, when heavy rain falls on it, is left stripped bare. They have no be able to gain anything of what they have earned. Allah does not guide unbelieving people. (Surat al-Baqara, 264)

Unbelievers cherish their possessions in the life of this world and are tied to them with love and great passion. However, unbelievers fail to recognize that these possessions are only means that allow them to hope for Allah’s good pleasure. As believers know on the other hand, the true Owner of everything they own is Allah; thus they carry out the worship of spending with great enthusiasm. Using the blessings Allah has bestowed upon them with great enthusiasm in order to earn Allah’s good pleasure and considering that spending is a means to draw closer to Almighty Allah proves believers’ loyalty to Allah, and demonstrates that they will not exchange His mercy and consent for anything in this world and that they are willing to sacrifice everything to achieve this in the best way possible.
