Interpretations of verses from Surat al-Naml

Look, the Prophet Solomon says to the hoopoe, ‘We will soon see if you have told the truth...

One must not immediately believe as soon as a report comes in from someone. What does he say? “We will see. We will soon see.” “...if you have told the truth,” It is no good trusting people blindly, one has to check them out. “...or are a liar. Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them...” So preaching can be done by post, sending letters or books, from a distance. There is no need to go in person. “...and then withdraw from them a little...” So they can think and reflect. One cannot ask people, “So, what do you think?” as soon as they are given a book or written materials. Pull back so they can think and investigate. “...and see how they respond.” What their reaction will be. In other words, the Qur’an is noting the importance of analysis, of analyzing events. Acting in the light of analysis, and changing one’s attitudes on the basis of how events work out. When the Queen of Sheba was given the letter, she said; “Council! a noble letter has been delivered to me.”

So she asks for advice. “It is from Solomon and says: “In the name of Allah, All-Merciful, Most Merciful’.”

‘Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.’ Look, all of my books start out “In the name of Allah the Compassionate and Merciful.” That is in all my books. It is also a reference to the Prophet Solomon’s (pbuh) letter. And the Holy Seal. Allah, His Messenger Muhammed, insha’Allah. It is Allah who creates that seal in the books, masha’Allah. “Do not rise up against me”Because the worst thing is pride. You cannot preach to a proud person. You cannot do anything. That pride has to go first. They must realize they are a servant of Allah. “...but come to me in submission [it says]” He encourages her to have faith. “She said, ‘Council! give me your opinion about this matter’.” The importance of seeking advice. She seeks advice, though she is a leader, a head of state. She asks her council people who know about these things. “Give me your opinion…” What do you think? What is your view? “It is not my habit to make a final decision until I have heard what you have to say.” Look, “I will not make a decision until I have sought your advice and opinions.” That is the most right and rational thing to do. Seek advice. Advice can be sought from prophets or doctors. This is the importance of consultation.
