An example from Almighty Allah's infinite power: Hurricanes

Atmospheric events like typhoons and hurricanes are disasters we often encounter. The severe winds that form during these incidents are sometimes strong enough to destroy houses, buildings, shacks, trees, electric poles and people.

A hurricane is among the most dangerous and devastating storms in the world. These storms occur between the months of June and November in the northern hemisphere of the Atlantic Ocean and begins in July and lasts for the better part of a year in the southern hemisphere. These ferocious storms form in the warm waters of tropical seas. The formation mechanisms and its effects prove one more time the infinite power of Almighty Allah and the weakness of human beings in the face of this power. Almighty Allah reminds us this truth as follows:
 

“Do you feel secure against Him Who is in heaven causing the earth to swallow you up when suddenly it rocks from side to side? Or do you feel secure against Him Who is in heaven releasing against you a sudden squall of stones, so that you will know how true My warning was? Those before them also denied but then how great was My denial!” (Surat Al-Mulk, 16-18)
 

How Do Hurricanes Form?

Almighty Allah creates many conditions for hurricanes to form. For example, hurricanes always begin in the oceans in the  tropical belts. Hurricanes can be compared to a machine that operates with heat. When they form, hot and humid air from the water begins to rise. During this process, it takes the tropical warm air and compresses it in a small region. As this warm air rises, the water vapor inside it begins to intensify and rain drops form. This intensification releases a heat called condensation heat. This hidden heat warms the air and prevents it from rising. The rising air is replaced with the warm and humid ocean air that comes from beneath. This cycle pulls more humid air from the ocean below to the developing storm region and continuously moves the hot air from the surface to the atmosphere. This temperature change coming from the surface forms a strong wind that turns like a whirlpool around a center. This cycle looks like the purling of the water flowing down the sink. Following this, lightning and rain are formed. Rain heats the weather even more, and decreases barometric pressure. The wind continues to fill in this space formed by the low air pressure. In this way, hurricanes are actually composed of many small storms. All of these small storms move together in a circle. As the hurricane increases its strength, a space called “hurricane eye” forms in the middle of it. At this point, the strength of rain and wind is somewhat at a lower level.

In order for a hurricane to be formed, many factors have to come together and all of them need to work together as a whole. In addition, it needs to have a fixed centered eye, which is the lower pressure cycle of the hurricane formed, a section called the eye wall where the fastest and strongest winds around the eye take place, and finally different sections that are part of the vaporization cycle feeding the storm and that moves out of the eye and where thunderstorms and rain zones are found. All of these zones indicate the art of detail created by Almighty Allah. If our Lord had wished, He would not create any reason for these storms to be formed, or He would not create details in their functioning mechanisms. All of these details happen as a manifestation of Almighty Allah’s name “All-Knowing”. Our Lord invites His servants to think one more time about His infinite power, intelligence and knowledge. Our Lord reveals in Surah Al ‘Imran as follows:
 

“In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are Signs for people with intelligence: those who remember Allah, standing, sitting and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: ‘Our Lord, You have not created this for nothing. Glory be to You! So safeguard us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Surah Al ‘Imran, 190-191)
