The secret of the strong bond between Muslims: Love and Humility

1203

The love seen amongst Muslims is a feeling that develops naturally due to the faith they have in God. It doesn't depend on material reasons, as Muslims love each other only for God’s pleasure. And this sincere love brings with it a deep level of humility, which when combined with love, produces a very strong bond between Muslims.

Following the morals of the Qur'an gives one a sublime character; for this reason, Muslims, by adhering to Quran, should set a great example to all people with their behavior, demeanor, manner and lifestyle. They should be the ones everyone seeks the company of, for their selfless, positive and helping attitude. One thing that should be most noticeable in a Muslim should be their affectionate, amiable, gentle and humble character.

Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) has always set a great example to all Muslims with his admirable character, wisdom, foresight, humble nature, love and compassion. And naturally Muslims would always crave his company as they would feel immediately at peace, serene and safe in his presence.

It is therefore crucial for all Muslims to be aware of this fact, and make a constant effort to be more like the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) and be a source of peace, comfort and refuge for everyone around them.

Prophet Mohammed’s Compassion and Love towards Muslims

Muslims are the true friends, guardians and protectors of each other. Every Muslim shall approach their Muslim brother or sister with respect, love and affection, willingly sacrifice his own interests for the sake of others’ and always be loyal. He should always approach with compassion to his brothers and sisters, be forgiving when they make mistakes, try to compensate for their shortcomings in the nicest way possible, and avoid any offensive words and attitudes.  Indeed, Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) advised Muslims to be forgiving with his following words: ‘Show compassion, so that you will be shown compassion. Forgive so that you will be forgiven…’

Our Lord praised Prophet Mohammed’s sublime character traits as follows in a verse:

“There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.” (Surat at-Tawba, 128)

Prophet Mohammed’s advice to believers to love and befriend each other is summarized in his words: ‘Give gifts to each other, love each other…’. Arguments, disagreements, or using differences as a reason for division are behaviors that Muslims should strongly avoid. As long as there is nothing against Qura'nic moral values, the different understandings and practices between Muslim individuals and communities should be considered as a cultural richness. Strictly following the advice of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) regarding these great character traits is a duty for all Muslims. Our beloved Prophet (pbuh) once said: ‘Do not be jealous of each other. Do not be hostile to each other. Do not cut ties off each other. Do not turn your faces away or get cross with each other and the servants of God, be brothers and sisters’. (Mace vol. 10, p. 32)

The humble nature of Muslims shows in their conversations

One could easily spot the sublime character of Muslims in their company as wherever they go, the atmosphere transforms into one where the Name of our Lord is praised, and where useful and beneficial conversations are carried out for God’s pleasure in an environment of peace, serenity and cleanliness that becomes even more pronounced due to the pleasant and amiable natures of Muslims. It is such that whenever Muslims come together, pleasant exchanges of affection, respect, compliments, and courtesy become a common sight.

Muslims always speak honestly and sincerely as they strictly avoid dishonest behaviors or words. They always act upon consultation with each other and therefore everyone’s ideas and input are valued. In a society of Qur'an-abiding Muslims, it would not be possible to encounter any argument in conversations, as Islam advises people not to force their ideas on others, and to always follow the wisest, rightest, and fairest choice. Muslims therefore stay away from any behavior that could suggest that they believe their input should be valued the most. The verse  “We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.” (Surat Yusuf, 76) explains perfectly how Muslims know that there can always be someone that knows better, and that therefore it would be a great mistake to claim that he has the best ideas. Even if someone is very-well educated in a subject, he should think about the possibility of someone else knowing more, and therefore should courteously listen to his brothers and sisters with interest. He should be able to benefit from their words and experiences. This desirable character trait can be obtained only a result of following the Qur'an.

Conclusion

For these reasons it is evident that all Muslims should strive to obtain these great character traits and as a result, achieve the sophisticated and high quality of life prescribed by Qur'anic moral values. Just like the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), Muslims should set an example to all humanity with their love, humbleness, kindness, gentleness, cleanliness, geniality, compassion, understanding nature and kind words. They should also make the greatest efforts to be the best examples in displaying Qura'nic moral values and sunnah with their behavior and demeanor. By the grace of God, those who display such beautiful behavior may be instrumental in creating an affinity in people’s hearts towards Islam.
