The continuity of the seasons

982

The seasons result from the fact that the Earth does not revolve around its own axis at the same speed it does around the Sun. This, of course, is a manifestation of a glorious order created by our Lord. Had God so wished, winter would have lasted for 365 days a year, and we would know no other kind of life. By creating four seasons, God imparts many different kinds of blessings on human beings.

God has created the seasons throughout the known course of human history right up to the present day. And He is still doing so. Everyone expects spring to be followed by summer, and nobody has any doubts on the subject. And summer duly comes. However, if God so chooses there may never be another summer on Earth. This fact is so that people who live by the Qur’an should reflect deeply on and give thanks for the blessings bestowed by God.

Each season has its own abundance of blessings. The blessings of summer include blooming flowers, fruits in their mouth-watering colours, and the delights of Sun and sea. God bestows His mercy on us by ensuring the continuity of these blessings. In one verse He reveals:

In the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and day, and the ships which sail the seas to people’s benefit, and the water which Allah sends down from the sky – by which He brings the earth to life when it was dead and scatters about in it creatures of every kind – and the varying direction of the winds, and the clouds subservient between heaven and earth, there are Signs for people who use their intellect. (Surat al-Baqara, 164)
