Satan’s clamor: Setting Believers against One Another

  • What methods of trickery and deception does satan use to set Muslims against one another?
  • What must Muslims do against satan’s clamor and what precautions must they take?

The Methods of Trickery and Deception that Satan uses to Set Muslims against One Another

God reveals the methods that satan uses to deceive people and lead them astray in Surat al-Isra’:

“Stir up any of them you can with your voice and rally against them your cavalry and your infantry and share with them in their children and their wealth and make them promises! The promise of satan is nothing but delusion.” (Surat al-Isra’, 64)

God gives believers very important secrets concerning satan in this verse. The first can be seen from the words “... any of them you can,” meaning that there are people whom satan cannot stir up. The next verse explains who these immune people are:

“But as for My servants, you will not have any authority over them.” Your Lord suffices as a guardian. (Surat al-Isra’, 65)

This means that satan has no power over devout Muslims who sincerely believe in God, who trust in and rely on Him alone, and who take Him as their only guardian.

What are the tactics that satan employs? The answer to this is given in verse 64 of Surat al-Isra’:

“Stir up any of them you can with your voice ...” Audio propaganda, stirring people up with sounds, is thus one of satan’s most important methods.

What Must be Done against Satan’s Audio Propaganda?

Muslims can thwart this trickery and these stratagems of satan’s by approaching his incitement and provocation with calmness and moderation, leaving no room for conflict and strife. Of course, as revealed in this verse, satan has no power over sincere Muslims; they pay no heed to this clamor of satan’s and never confuse truth and falsehood.

God calls on people in the Qur’an to speak gently and not to fall prey to anger. Since the finest and best form of behavior is that which is commanded in the Qur’an, it is important to swiftly abide by the commandments of the Qur’an and to compete in performing good deeds without delay.

True Muslims are people of love. They scrupulously abide by the commands of the faith. Therefore, the best way for Muslims to respond to satan’s propaganda techniques is to exhibit the best form of behavior revealed in the Qur’an without being deceived by the loveless and hate-filled words and provocations of people who hope to benefit from disorder; Muslims must base themselves on a spirit of brotherhood and thus deal the heaviest possible blow to satan’s plans.

The Only Solution Is Union of Muslims

The only way to thwart satan’s plans is the spirit of unity. For that reason, it is vitally important for all Muslims, and thus for all Islamic communities and societies, to raise and espouse the subject of unity at every opportunity and to tell people how essential it is.

No subject is more vital or urgent than unity. All other issues and problems stem from this most important matter not being raised and from a lack of prayers and actions on the subject.

God reveals in several verses that Muslims will be weakened if they are not united, but that union and unity mean strength, prosperity and success. Since God thus stresses the importance of Muslims being united, being disinterested and apathetic on the subject is not behavior that will be pleasing to Him, and such behavior may lead to much trouble and strife.

All Muslims today must adopt Bediüzzaman’s determination and fervor to see the unification of the Islamic world as a role model

Throughout his life, the great Islamic scholar Bediüzzaman waged an intellectual struggle for the unity of the Muslim world, and raised Muslims’ awareness on the subject of bringing that unity about. “The greatest obligation at this time is Islamic Union ...” said Bediüzzaman, thus expressing in the wisest possible manner the importance of striving for the unification of the Islamic world. In his Risalat an-Nur, the Master Bediüzzaman concentrates on Muslims loving and supporting one another, living in solidarity and protecting and watching over one another, and his attitude is always one of reconciliation and unification.

It is vitally important today for all Muslims to adopt this language of Bediüzzaman’s as a role model, to demonstrate the same determination and fervor for the unification of the Islamic world as he did and not to allow anyone to slack on the subject: It must not be forgotten that unity among Muslims is God’s command and will, by God’s leave, definitely come about.

By God’s leave, the unity of the Islamic world will mean people standing together like sturdy buildings, regarding one another as true brothers on God’s path, and will be instrumental in people all over the world living by the moral values of the Qur’an. In his Damascus Sermon, our Master Bediüzzaman Said Nursi described union of Muslims as follows:

I repeat: the means of unity of the Muhammadan Union, which in reality is Islamic Unity, is Divine Unity. Its oath and pledge is belief. … Its membership consists of all believers.

Muslims Have an Obligation to Be United

Satan will always strive to set Muslims against one another, but believers must know that this is all trickery. Unity among Muslims, and their never falling into division, is God’s command. All Muslims are brothers, no matter what their language, race or sect; the closeness and friendship between them must therefore be identical to that between two brothers. In the same way that two brothers will never leave one another in the lurch, will always hasten to help one another in times of need, will support and watch over one another, so all Muslims, no matter where in the world they may be, must love, protect and support one another just like blood brothers.

If Muslims do not do this, if they do not love and protect one another like brothers, if they are not united, then they will not be obeying God’s command and that is a position in which no Muslim will ever wish to find himself. Every Muslim who loves and fears God and who scrupulously abides by His commands must strive for the unity of the Islamic world and constantly work and pray to that end.
