In 1990, the Muslim population was 152,200, or 2.2% of the Switzerland’s resident population. A surprising development for those who know that in the early seventies there were less than 20,000 Muslims living in Switzerland, Islam is now the second largest religion in Switzerland, after Christianity.
According to the latest figures by various Islamic associations or organizations in the country, the number of Muslims living in it is now around 200,000 to 250,000. To put it another way, Islam represents 2.8 to 3.5% of the settled population of Switzerland.
The Muslim population is spread across Switzerland, with 73% living in urban centers. Whereas twenty years ago there were only three mosques in Switzerland, (two in Geneva and one in Zurich), there are now almost 90.
This development in Switzerland is of course most pleasing, as is that in the rising Muslim population in various other countries of the world. As promised by Allah in the Qur’an, the moral values of Islam will soon come to prevail across the world and, insha’Allah, everyone will clearly see the abundance, beauty and happiness that Islam brings to the world.
