The first affliction that comes upon a person when he does not act by his good conscience is the loss of his mind. Such a person would lose his mind. Would he be aware of his situation? No, he won't be aware: That is because he would be left to his intelligence alone, so he cannot understand his situation. His mind would be lost and he would be left to his intelligence alone. God generally does not take away one's intelligence, but He takes away his mind. Except for some rare occasions, God does not take away one's intelligence. However when God takes away one's mind, his intelligence would no longer have any use for him. His intelligence would only get him into troubles from then on. Intelligence would make him grovel. - Harun Yahya
