Surah Al-‘Imran, 100

You who believe! if you obey a group of those given the Book, they will make you revert to being unbelievers after you have believed.

What does “obey” mean? To completely follow their belief. For example, you revert to total belief in the Trinity. In that event, you have lost your faith. But a Christian will say, “I believe in the hereafter.” That is fine. I believe in it, too. We are agreed on that. He will say, “I love the Prophet Abraham (pbuh).” I love him, too, and we are agreed on that. “There is one Allah,” he says, and that is again excellent and we are fully agreed. But if there is an element that represents polytheism, then we cannot be agreed on that. That is the meaning of this passage from the Qur’an.
