Similarities between Hazrat Mahdi (as) and the Prophets

[The prophets ‘Isa (as), Yahya (as), Musa (as), Yusuf (as), Ibrahim (as), Nuh (as), Sulayman (as), Dawud (as) and Ayyub (as)]

Abdullah Ibn Dhamra relates that Ka’b Ibn Mati` al-Himyari (Ka`b al-Ahbar) said: "… The Qaim, Hazrat Mahdi (as) who will appear will be descended from the blessed Ali (a sayyid). He will make the world a very different place... Hazrat Mahdi (as) is from the line of the blessed Ali. IT IS HE WHO MOST RESEMBLES THE PROPHET ‘ISA (AS) IN GOODNESS, APPEARANCE AND MORAL VIRTUE. ALLAH WILL ALSO GIVE HIM THAT (THE GREATNESS) HE GAVE THE PROPHETS. He will give him virtue and ornament. There is no doubt that Hazrat Mahdi (as) is the son of Ali. HIS DISAPPEARANCE IS LIKE THAT OF THE PROPHET YUSUF (AS) AND HIS RETURN IS JUST LIKE THAT OF ‘ISA (AS), SON OF MARYAM...

Abu Basir says: I heard Imam Muhammad Bakir (as) say: “HE WHO POSSESSES THIS MYSTERY [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL HAVE THE SUNNA OF FOUR PROPHETS. ONE SUNNA FROM THE PROPHET MUSA, ONE FROM THE PROPHET ‘ISA (AS), ONE FROM THE PROPHET YUSUF (AS) AND ONE FROM THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (SAAS), may the peace of Allah be upon them all.

I SAID: WHAT IS THE SUNNA OF MUSA (AS)? HE SAID: TO WITHDRAW AND LIVE APART. I SAID: WHAT IS THE SUNNA OF ‘ISA (AS)? AND HE SAID: WHAT IS SAID ABOUT ‘ISA (AS) WILL ALSO BE SAID ABOUT HIM. I SAID, WHAT IS THE SUNNA OF YUSUF (AS)? AND HE SAID: IMPRISONMENT AND DISAPPEARANCE. I SAID, WHAT IS THE SUNNA OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (SAAS)? HE SAID: HE WILL FOLLOW IN THE PATH OF THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH WHEN HE APPEARS. Only he will elucidate the works of the Messenger of Allah...I said: How will he know Allah’s approval? And he said: “Allah will manifest His mercy in his heart.”

Sadr al-Sayrafi says: I heard Imam Abu Abdullah Jafer al-Sadiq say: He said: "THE OWNER OF THIS TASK [THE HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL HAVE A RESEMBLENCE TO YUSUF(AS)].” AND I SAID: “IT IS AS IF YOU ARE TELLING US OF A DISAPPEARANCE OR ASTONISHMENT.”

... I said: It is as if you are telling us of a disappearance or astonishment. He said: The brothers of YUSUF were clever and intelligent. They were children of a prophet. They came into the presence of Yusuf and talked to him, and addressed him and shopped with him. They did not recognize him, even though they were his brothers; until he introduced himself to them and said, “I am Yusuf.” Then they recognized him. So how will this lost and aimless people deny that Allah can hide His Hujjat [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] from them? Yusuf was the ruler of Egypt, and his father was 18 days’ journey away. Had Yusuf wished to make his presence known, he had the power to do so. I swear to Allah that when they gave the good news to Yaqub (as) he went to Egypt in 9 days, and if Allah applies the very same process to His Hujjat [Hazrat Mahdi (as)], why does this community deny this?

THE WRONGED IMAM OF YOURS WHOSE RIGHTS ARE VIOLATED AND WHO IS DENIED AND HE WHO DISAPPEARS [(HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL MOVE AMONG THEM AND GO THEIR MARKETS AND TREAD WHERE THEY TREAD. BUT THEY WILL NOT RECOGNIZE HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) UNTIL ALLAH GIVES HIM PERMISSION TO REVEAL HIMSELF, AS HE DID WITH YUSUF. AT THAT TIME HIS BROTHERS SAID, “ARE YOU TRULY YUSUF?” AND HE SAID, “I AM YUSUF(AS).”
Kulayni relates the same hadith.

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 189)

BUT HUJJAT [(HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL RECOGNIZE THE PEOPLE. BUT THE PEOPLE DON’T RECOGNIZE HIM. JUST LIKE THE PROPHET YUSUF(AS)]. ALTHOUGH YUSUF KNEW THE PEOPLE, THEY DENIED HIM. Then the blessed Ali read this verse, “Shame on the servants, they mocked the messenger when he came.”

HE [(HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] IS A MERCY ON THE WORLDS. HE HAS THE MATURITY OF MUSA (AS)], THE WORTH OF ‘ISA (AS)] AND THE PATIENCE OF AYYUB (AS)]...

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 69-70)

IN THE SAME WAY THAT ALMIGHTY ALLAH GAVE A BOOK, THE PROPHETHOOD, KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM TO ‘ISA (AS), SON OF MARYAM, AND YAHYA (AS), SON OF ZAKARIYYA, SO HE GIVES KNOWLEDGE TO THIS IMAM [(HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] FROM AN EARLY AGE.

The evidence for this lies in the words of our imam Jafar-i Sadiq: HE RESEMBLES THOSE FOUR PROPHETS. ONE IS ‘ISA (AS), THE SON OF MARYAM. BECAUSE IN THE SAME WAY THAT ALLAH GAVE HIM WISDOM, PROPHETHOOD, A BOOK AND KNOWLEDGE FROM AN EARLY AGE, SO HE GAVE THOSE TO HIM FROM AN EARLY AGE...

... HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL RULE WITH THE LAW OF DAWUD AND THE LINE OF DAWUD AND WILL SEEK NO WITNESS OR PROOF FROM ANYONE.

(Irshad (Sheikh Mufid), p. 365-366)

Sheikh Mufid says: "WHEN THE QAIM [(HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] APPEARS HE WILL RULE WITH SECRET KNOWLEDGE, JUST LIKE THE PROPHET DAWUD (AS), and will rule with no need for witnesses. ALLAH WILL INSPIRE HIM THE COMMAND AND HE WILL RULE ACCORDING TO THAT DIVINE INSPIRATION.

Aban Ibn Taglib says: I went to a mosque in Mecca with Imam Jafari Sadiq. He took my hand and said: "... He will then command a herald, and the herald will cry out: HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL RULE LIKE SULAYMAN AND DAWUD. HE WILL SEEK NO PROOF OR WITNESS IN HIS COMMAND.”

Imam Zayn al-Abidin stated: “THERE ARE SOME SIMILARITIES BETWEEN OUR QAIM (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) AND ALLAH’S MESSENGERS. HE HAS SIMILARITIES TO EACH ONE OF PROPHET NUH (AS), IBRAHIM (AS), MUSA (AS), ISA (AS), AYYUB (AS) AND MUHAMMAD (SAAS). He has similarity to NUH (as) in having a long life; to IBRAHIM (as) in having his birth being hidden and his staying away from the public; to MUSA (as) in his state of fear (the intensity of dangers directed to Hazrat Mahdi (as); his being face to face to all kinds of danger like murder, plotting, arrest, taking into custody and exile) and his constantly spending his life hiding; to ISA (as) in people being in conflict about him (some people will say Hazrat Mahdi (as) will come while others will say he will not); to AYYUB (as) in being delivered to salvation after trouble (Hazrat Mahdi (as) will also suffer many difficulties, diseases and trouble; however just like Prophet Ayyub (as) he will be saved by Allah’s mercy); to Muhammad (saas) in his standing up with his sword (our Prophet’s (saas) holy relics will be with Hazrat Mahdi (as)).
