Polarization Can Be Solved by Using the Language of Peace of the Qur'an

1441

If people are asked about their expectations for the world, many will express a hope for world peace and love. So why, when people desire peace so much, is there so much turmoil, unease and fighting? The reason is that people think they can obtain the climate of peace and tranquility they desire through the wrong means and seek a solution in the wrong places. As a consequence, polarization develops in society and people move even further away from reconciliation and peace. The polarization referred to here is not, of course, the existence of people holding different views and ideas, which is itself a requirement of democracy: In this instance, polarization means that people at different extremes hold extremely divergent views and harbor feelings of hatred, conflict and hostility for one another.

Polarizations in society have generally persisted down through the generations and throughout the ages and have often been the source of conflict and wars, and even genocide and mass slaughter. The mentality is always the same; “If you go along with our ideas, perspective and world view, you are one of us; but if not, there is no place for you here.” Some people have even gone so far as to say ideas opposite to their own “should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Yet there is an easy way for everyone to attain the peace and tranquility they desire. The solution to all polarization, conflict and disagreement lies in both sides abandoning negative emotions such as obstinacy, anger, hatred and aggression and replacing them with superior virtues such as respect, love, affection, understanding, humility, forgiveness, friendship and brotherhood. The source describing these lofty moral virtues in the best and most accurate way is our Holy Qur’an. In the Qur’an, God calls on His servants to use only the best words when they speak and to behave modestly, using the language of peace:

“Say to My servants that they should only say the best. Satan wants to stir up trouble between them. Satan is an outright enemy to man.” (Surat al-‘Isra, 53)

Our Lord cites some of the desirable outcomes of responding to evil with goodness:

“A good action and a bad action are not the same. Repel the bad with something better and, if there is enmity between you and someone else, he will be like a bosom friend.” (Surat al-Fussilat, 34)

People using this language of peace revealed by God in the Qur’an for the establishment of brotherhood, and their speaking kind and gentle words instead, will be a fine role model for others to abandon behavior that compromises peace and encourages enmity. In the Qur’an, God tells the Prophets Moses and Aaron to speak to Pharaoh with “gentle words,” even though his beliefs and ideas are radically different to theirs:

“Go to Pharaoh; he has overstepped the bounds. But speak to him with gentle words so that hopefully he will pay heed or show some fear.” (Surah Ta Ha, 43-44)

Once the language of peace described in the Qur’an prevails across the world, artificial problems that have afflicted the world for centuries, such as polarization and the spirit of conflict, will, by God’s leave, come to an end. No other solution apart from living by the moral values of the Qur’an is realistic: Indeed, all political, social and technical solutions have been tried many times to date, yet none has produced lasting results.

What needs to be done in order for the language of love of the Qur’an to prevail is for all people to adopt the concept of love and affection described in the Qur’an; the way for that to happen is through education. Through this education, to be provided by teachers of love who concentrate on truth, love and peace, people will naturally turn towards the “language of peace.” That language is the real key to opening the doors to people’s hardened hearts. There are no “terrorists, murderers, ruthless dictators, brutal massacres, imposition of ideas, destruction, bullying or offensive language” in this language of peace. Even if the conditions are ideally suited to anger and rage, there will be no offensive or angry talk in the language of peace. There will be no people spreading hatred and rancor in the language of peace, and no angry types forcing people down the path of polarization. Instead, there will be teachers of love who soothe people’s hearts with affection, understanding and kindness. There is respect for all races, all ethnicities and all nations in the language of peace; in the language of love, it is important that people of different beliefs are able to express their own beliefs and ideas freely and securely. In the language of peace, there is love, affection and compassion for all living things created by God, as well as for all human beings.

The time has come to relinquish the language of anger used for so many years, a language that does nothing more than end in hatred and slaughter, in favor of the language of love. Now is the time that we must become people who use the language of peace and resolve our problems.

It is very easy for people to be saved from this ocean of ignorance by telling everyone, everywhere, that the Qur’an is based on love, affection and compassion. It entails hard work, of course, because ignorance can only be eradicated by people of love who use the language of peace through education and this will require great persistence and determination. The climate of turmoil, rage and hatred seemingly so ubiquitous in the world today can only be brought to an end by teaching this language of love and peace so that all people can live in security, peace and justice, no matter what their language, race, political opinions or faith.
