An important aspect of man’s trial in this world is the need to put forth an unceasing effort about every issue until the end of his life. Indeed, one of the most important portents of being a genuine Muslim is never to make concessions to live by the morality of the Qur’an until one breathes his last.
The satan will whisper to man until the end of his life, and man will resist against his temptations by the morality of the Qur’an. His lower-self will try to draw him towards the evil while man will defeat the evil in his lower-self and be good until the end of his life.
People with poor faith around a man will try to drag him towards being careless about one’s religion until the end of his life while he will remain resolute to serve Allah with zeal until the end of his life.
Hardships, trouble, trials will follow one another until the end of life and, with his faith, a believer will persist to show perseverance against them everyday, every moment.
Consequently it is absolutely out of question for a person to make studious effort for a day or two, a week, a month or a few years and then get to rest in the life of this world. From the moment one opens his eyes to a new day and gains his consciousness, man is responsible for making effort even in issues he knows and has trained himself very well, as if he has started everything from the very start.
A person may be known to be the most self-sacrificing, industrious, faithful, compassionate, merciful and respectful person with the best moral qualities and a profound fear of Allah. However, this conviction never pushes him into contentment and stagnation. And thus his efforts never diminish. On the contrary, a person becomes even more resolute every day, every hour as his fear of Allah and faith deepens. That is because, no matter how good his attitudes and morality may be, his acknowledgment of the certainty of the Hereafter and Allah’s infinite torment in Hell ensures a constant openness of consciusness for him.
A person may spend 23 hours of his day with such a perfect use of his conscience. But for the single remaining hour, he can never say, “Let me put the voice of my conscience aside and give a break. I spent a great part of my day struggling to display moral perfection.” On the contrary, to the best of his efforts, he struggles to live by the best moral quality as he can.
Such a spirit actually demands a very serious effort, wisdom, attention and use of conscience. However this is not a difficult effort that makes a believer tiresome. From the moment a Muslim has faith, he does this with love of Allah. This is a struggle that opens and revives the heart of a beliver and makes him even better and more profound in faith.
That is because this effort originates from love of Allah. This is the kind of effort that reveals his loyalty and love for Allah and originates from one’s desire to become deserving of Allah’s beautiful morality. It is an effort that comes from one’s heart and is put forth with sincerity, enthusiasm and happiness.
In the Qur’an, this constant effort originating from belivers’ love of Allah is praised as follows:
Wealth and sons are the embellishment of the life of the dunya. But, in your Lord’s sight, right actions which are lasting bring a better reward and are a better basis for hope. (Surat al-Kahf, 46)
